I spent my first 11 years in Topeka, Kansas. Even though I wasn’t a full time farm kid, we spent Sunday afternoons and much of the summer on my grandparents’ farm nearby.
I count myself fortunate to have had such a close relationship with true farm life. Knowing where the milk, eggs, and meat came from; having a hand in the picking and prepping of fruits and veggies; experiencing the closeness of three generations working together — I wish everyone could experience that. It’s a rich life.
This picture was taken at the end of a morning spent picking peaches, in 1970. (I wish everyone could experience a fully-ripe, sun-warmed peach, fresh from the tree, too!) From L to R: Grammy, me, my sister, our mom, Aunt M.
